What to Expect at Your First Physical Therapy Visit

Starting physical therapy can feel a little unfamiliar, but our goal is to make your first visit comfortable, informative, and focused on helping you feel better.

To prepare for your first visit, write down a list of concerns or problems that you want to address during your treatment. Bring a list of your medications and important medical history that we need to be aware of. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled time or simply print off your past medical history that can be completed prior to your visit.

Your first session usually lasts about 45–60 minutes and is all about getting to know you, your body, and what you want to accomplish with therapy.

First, we’ll talk.

Your physical therapist will ask questions about what brought you in, when your symptoms started, and how the issue is affecting your daily life. We’ll also discuss your medical history, past injuries, and what activities you’d like to get back to—whether that’s exercising, working, playing with your kids, or simply moving without pain.

Next, we will look at how you move.

Your therapist will perform a movement evaluation to better understand what’s going on. This might include checking your strength, flexibility, range of motion, posture, balance, or the way you walk or perform certain movements. These tests help us find the root cause of the problem, not just the symptoms.

Then we’ll explain what we find.

After the evaluation, your therapist will walk you through what they discovered. Education is key to recovery. We believe you should fully understand what’s going on with your body and how therapy can help.

We’ll create a plan together.

Based on your goals and evaluation, your therapist will develop a personalized treatment plan designed to help you move better and feel better. This may include exercises, hands-on treatment, mobility work, and strategies to reduce pain and improve function.

You’ll likely get started right away.

In many cases, we’ll begin treatment during your first visit so you can start making progress immediately.

Before you leave.

Your therapist will often give you a few exercises or tips to work on at home. These help support your progress between visits and are an important part of recovery.

Our goal is simple: help you move better, feel stronger, and get back to doing the things you enjoy.

Insurance

Most major insurance plans cover physical therapy that is provided by a licensed physical therapist. Depending on your plan, your insurance company may pay for full or part of your services. When scheduling an appointment, you will be asked about your insurance information. As a courtesy to our patients, we will verify your benefits prior to your first visit. This will let you know what you can expect to owe at each visit, whether you need to meet your deductible, have a copay or co-insurance. Please bring your insurance card to your first visit.

We accept most major insurance plans. Please call to find out if we are in-network with your insurance plan.

We also accept worker’s compensation and litigation cases.

Direct Access

In Louisiana, “Direct Access” means you can see a licensed physical therapist without first getting a referral from a physician. This allows you to schedule an evaluation and begin treatment more quickly when you’re dealing with pain, an injury, or difficulty moving.

Louisiana law does include a few guidelines for patient safety. Physical therapists providing care through direct access must have the appropriate training or clinical experience, and if a patient is not improving within a certain period of time, they will refer the patient to a physician or appropriate healthcare provider.

At Danni Jones Physical Therapy, our skilled team of licensed Physical Therapists have over 40+ years of clinical experience and training in differential diagnosis and musculoskeletal conditions to allow for safe evaluations.

Direct access helps patients start treatment sooner, which can often lead to faster recovery and fewer delays in getting back to normal activities.

While Louisiana allows direct access to physical therapy, some insurance plans may still require a physician referral for coverage. Please contact our office at 3182512995 (provide link) with any questions and to get started.

What Our Patients are Saying

I'm sure all facilities are good, but DJPT is warming and my wife and I can feel it, we both spent time doing rehab with Hannah at the clinic. It is top of the line and all staff is first class! The warmth and friendliness from everyone is what makes us feel so comfortable. I also love the perk of getting to use the facility and having the helpful staff available for DJPT's maintenance program after graduation.
